Save the world – pee in the shower

I love that TV show Monk, about an obsessive San Francisco detective who gets all freaked out at the slightest breach of hygiene.  I wonder how he would feel about this new environmental movement?

You see, down there in South America a revolution has started.  Its a streaming revolution, led by an army of urinators, taking aim at a single target: conservation.

The new campaign in Brazil was designed to teach citizens that peeing in the shower is not just a forgivable habit — it’s an honorable enterprise — and can effectively save water over frequent toilet use.  The campaign was organized by SOS Mata Atlantica (“SOS Atlantic Rainforest”), whose primary goal is stopping rainforest destruction.

So, they took this pee in the shower idea and decided to run with it.  The campaign has a wonderful website and a humorous attitude.  I’ve taken the liberty of showing some of their website here with translation, since it is all in portuguese.

Front Page:

After clicking a “yes” or “no” on whether you already pee in the shower, you are taken to the voting results.  A suprising 72% of voters admitted to shower urination.  There is a section on the bottom of the page with little droplets of pee.  Each time you hover over one of the cute droplets, a quote from a visitor (either shower urinator or non-shower-urinator) appears.  One of the quotes read, “Yes! I pee in the shower!”.

The water cycle:

By peeing in the shower, you can save up to 12 liters of water per day.  Spending less water, we don’t degrade nature as much.  We preserve natural resources and river water.  Full and clean rivers means more water stored in reservoirs.  The divided reservoir of potable water in the center reads “shower, waste, other”.
