Self-Reflection and the Struggle to Exist

French actress and film director Jeanne Moreau once said that cinema “is the mirror of the world”.  Indeed it is!

Back in 1987, another French national, Vincent Carelli, brought his camera into the south Amazon tribe of the Nambiquaras, he offered these native Brazilians a chance to marvel at their own reflection and to fight for their existence.

That’s how the project Video in the Villages was created.  The goal of this project is to give technical and financial support to indigenous people’s film productions in order to strengthen Brazilian Indian identity and preserve their cultural heritage.

Since that first tribe marveled at their own image projected on a big screen in the late 80′s, more than nineteen different tribes of indigenous people in Brazil have become involved in the project and have developed their own films which range from short documentaries that record their struggles to maintain their land and culture, to elaborate scripted films that recount tales and myths, and revive traditional practices and ceremonies.

You can watch extracts from some of their videos at the project’s YouTube channel, and go to their webpage to find out more about the project.

  1. I mean…unless you’re bi-curious? Either way, it’s up to you whether or not you’ll carry out your wife’s fantasy. Personally, I’d tell her to fuck off and then hang with my own friends.
